what is chitting?

i have seen people refering to chitting potatoes loads of times but don't kno what it actually is. I had a look at the wsititorp forum but i still can't determine what it means.
I don't have a drink problem. I drink, I get drunk, I pass out. No Problem.

It'll be in the glossary clare, but basically it's leaving the seed pots in a frost free, light enviroment so the eyes develop into small stubby shoots, it's supposed to increase yeild and get your spuds off to a good start.

There is nothing like a good chit and your potatoes will love you for it.  It is the process of alowing them to grow shoots in the presence of light and a little warmth until they are planted in the soil.  Every potato wll probably require different treatment.

You put the seed potatoes in a cool frost free place where they get light and away from frost The potatoes will then grow shoots, this is the stage I am at now, having never grown them before myself I am in the same position as you. But I am learning all the time.

thankyou. i thought might be what it was but i didn't want to embarass myself as i usually do talking about things i don't have a clue about.

can you use potatoes from the shop or should you always buy them from gardn centres. i have a terrible habbit of buying tatties for dinner then only using half a bag and the rest go in the bin.

well some folks will say don't use the one's from the shop but, just as you have, I often have some left over that start to grow in the cupboard and have planted these in the past and they're fine so go for it!
