Hi there and welcome to the site

What are they planted in (compost?)

Are they indoors or outdoors?

Whereabouts in the UK are you (perhaps add this to your forum profile)?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The seed has germinated and produced two seed leaves. But there is no chlorophyll in them , they are not green. That suggests there is no nutrient in your compost.

I'm not sure that's necessarily correct, Ivor.  Seedlings at that stage of germination get their nutrients primarily from the seed itself, and seed compost is deliberately low in nutrients to avoid problems.

Yorkie: I understand what you saying. The seed has germinated but the elements needed to form chlorophyll are not there so photosynthesis cannot take place.
The compost in the photograph is nothing like that I use for germination, so we will have to wait for BMDave to update us.

I have to say it does look more like wood chips/mulch than compost...and the chicken wire would suggest that it's outside otherwise it wouldn't need that protection in a cold frame or greenhouse.

BeardmanDave...was it sown outdoors in the ground or was it sown in compost in a pot?

Hi, thanks for the replys. It was sown  in a greenhouse in seeding compost, as it's been warm I thought I'd trial putting some outside. I've hardened them off for a week first. It's now outside in a bed which has had a horse manure top dressing in autumn that has been worked in recently. The one in the photo is the only one in the ground, I have some others outside and they are also purple but haven't got the damage.

Brassicas certainly don't mind the cold, but I'd keep seedlings sheltered until they've got a few, well developed true leaves.

They also prefer alkali soils so it's likely that the horse muck is too acid and, despite it being worked in, is still a bit on the acid side and the seedling isn't developed enough to cope with it.
