Too late for Garlic?
« on: February 09, 2017, 16:15 »
Hi,

As title suggests, have I "missed the boat" for planting Garlic? I have been given some recently but know it's best to overwinter them. I'll be doing them in pots as I'm moving house soon.

Thanks,
Mike.

Not too late at all if yours is a spring-planting variety, but possibly worth trying even if it isn't.

Mine won't go in for a couple of weeks - main requirement is the period with a soil temperature below 10C that is needed to ensure the bulbs split into proper individual cloves - it's usually quoted as 40 days and I've never had a problem with clove formation planting in late Feb.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Ah, OK, i see. Thank you. Interesting about the 40 days / 10ºc part, I shall remember that for the future!

I never plant my garlic in the winter. I only grow spring garlic which is the rose coloured rather than white if you can get some whack it in at anytime in the newyear when the ground is suitable. What I actually do is plant my garlic up in three inch pots and grow them on in the unheated poly tunnel they then go in to the ground sometime in March.
