Advice on where to site a shed....
« on: January 24, 2008, 14:16 »
Popped up to my new lottie this morning - while the sun was out!!!!!

It appears the plots run in a east/west direction.

The boundary at the easterly end of the plot is a 6' ish hedge which I assume will get bigger over summer, although one of the plot holders does all the trimming and grass cutting. I don't know how much shadow this will cast on the plot. :?

Does anyone have any advice on where the best place to put a shed and a greenhouse. I know I am going to get shadows from them wherever I put them but is there a 'best place'? I was thinking of putting the shed up by the hedging.

:? That's a tough one Snapdragon.  Luckily mine run in a (rough) south northerly direction, so the sheds are in the north.

I might be inclined to put the shed and greenhouse at the far western end - when the sun rises and travels across the sky, it is warming up the soil all the time until late afternoon.  If the shed was in the east, it would cast a shadow up to about midday.

But having said that, there's the 6' hedge which is a bit tall isn't it for an allotment?  Sometimes when there is a cold east wind it is nice to have some sort of windbreak, but that's a bit excessive!

 :D

Mmmm, I'd put the shed in the shadiest spot so you don't waste a nice bit of sunny ground.  And My greenhouses are facing East/West, and my polytunnel faces north/south.  So my tomatoes get the best of both worlds I think.

The Westerley end would be fine... It would go on the boundary next to the 'road' that leads round the other plots.

The hedge is the boundary to the allotment... a housing estate is on the other side!

I have a hedge (about 12') on the western end of my plot (goes west-east) next to that is a greenhouse and then a shed in front of it.  Not sure how well it works yet coz I inherited it like this but it seems to get a lot of light even at this time of the year.
