fruit tree root stock ?
« on: April 11, 2016, 20:21 »
Well in last year storm one of the new apple trees snapped of just above the graft its now grown a maiden from the root stock I presume this will grow into a quince tree . should I dig it out and re grow in a large pot planted deeper to encorage multi stem usable rootstocks or just bin it ?
This is the first age that has ever paid much attention to the future which is ironic since we may not have one !(Arthur c Clarke)

It will grow into an apple (not a quince) but not a variety you would eat as it is grown for its root characteristics not its fruit. If it is just a single stem I would scrounge a scion from someone (happy to oblige if you send me a pm I still have lots in the fridge) and graft onto it yourself. Your idea of trying to encourage it to sucker may work.

Hi thanks for that but as its a "J"shaped shoot I dont think it will take a graft and be strong enough So I will try to get it to sucker  and see always thought apples were on quince root stock perhaps I am thinking of pears .

Quince 'A' and 'C' are pear rootstocks.

If you want to try and make a 'stool' to produce more rootstocks I would cut it off quite low then heap soil/compost up over it rather than move it, as it is already established. It should then sucker, hopefully they will root into the compost and be easy to divide later in the year.
