Replacing raspberry canes with new stock
« on: February 29, 2016, 17:58 »
My raspberry canes are showing their age and need to be replaced. Trouble is the old ones are in an ideal location, they catch the sun, don't shade anything else, near path for picking and they have a good support framework in place. Is it OK to plant new canes where the old ones where or would I be wasting my time. Anyone have experience please of replacing rasp canes without a shift in location???

rasps are heavy feeders so replace top 10-12 inch of soil from other part of plot mixing in as much manure/compost as poss at same time prob solved

Thanks meterman, I sort of feared that would be the answer, so as soon as the weather goes dry again that is what I will do. Thanks again.

RichardA:

I don't know whether you asked the panel on Gardeners Question Time, but somebody did. Their response was "plant them somewhere else if you can because they get (I forget what) virus and may not do very well" or words to that effect.
