Bean ID help please?
« on: October 21, 2015, 13:09 »
I can't find the label for these.

Climbing French bean. Not an F1 variety.  Flat pods green streaked with dark purple, about 15cm long. Black seeds, roundish not bean shaped, with white scar.

The pod in the picture is about two thirds of its length as I broke it earlier, and is partially dried.

I have searched our google friend to no avail.

I think this may have come in the Seed Round Robin Parcel (not from the Seed Circle).

Any suggestions please?

According to Kings catalogue Cobra has black beans, the only one in there with variegated pod is barlotta lingua di fuoco

Have the pods always been mottled or only now at the drying stage? if the later is it possibly black croatian?

If not do any of the names seem familiar on here http://www.beansandherbs.co.uk/heirloombeanseed.htm

Thank you for your suggestions. Trouble is:

Aunt Sally: although the beans look identical to Black Turtle beans, their plants only get about two feet tall -- New Shoot & I saw them at Wisley this Summer

Annen: I grew the firetongue beans and they have cream and pink mottled seeds; Cobra has green pods and bean shaped seeds

Norfolk Grey: Black Croatian also has bean shaped seeds, not round, and there is nothing like it on the heirloom site, unfortunately.

Maybe it is a new thing -- a climbing turtle bean . How good would that be!!

I shall grow them next year as an un-named shelling variety as they seemed to crop quite heavily, albeit somewhat late, and in the meanwhile someone might come forward and say they know what they are as they have some too.

Quote:

Black bean plants are usually the vining type, but some varieties grow in a shorter bush form. Either way, your plants won’t usually grow taller than around 3 feet.

They look very like Cherokee Trail of Tears Pole Bean from Real Seeds.  Very productive.  Have grown them for the last 5 years, not F1, black seed.  Could they be those?

They could well be as I gave Sunshine some of my saved seeds to try.  The beans are identical to my dried bean crop this year and the description of the pods sounds spot on  :)

Mine are like that, but they were saved seeds I swapped for.  Maybe they are something else, or crossed somewhere down the line

They are prolific and easy to grow, so I'm not too unhappy if they are not the real deal
