Borlotto beans in the North
« on: September 27, 2015, 14:09 »
Tried Fiery Tongue Borlotto climbing beans for the first time this year, Prime open spot in well manured soil but a really pathetic yield. I'd say about five pods per plant.

It may be the consequence of a poor summer, or is Cumbria too far north for them to be prolific?

Not tried the fiery variety, but I've had varied results with the standard borlotto - wouldn't say they were the highest yielding, but when they've been really poor so have all my other beans  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Got a decent crop here in Cheshire, not massive, but then I didn't really give them much attention. Neighbour had a good crop and said that the pods were longer this year than last.

All my other beans (broad, runner and French climbers) did well

Broad bean fine, dwarf French beans good but stopped suddenly with change of night time temperatures, runner beans too late to be worth the space and borlotto nothing really doing.

Mind you, the borlotto beans started out well then came to a halt with a couple of close to frosts in June. I couldn't get the runners started off which is why they are late.

I have had several goes here in Yorkshire.  They are so pretty.  The yield is always very low.  I am not sure I will save seed.  They are a bit of a luxury.
