any mushroom experts on here?
« on: September 14, 2015, 18:17 »
hi all.

is anyone a bit of a mushroom expert on here that can help with what types of mushroom are ok to eat?

or does anyone have a web site or book that is good to recognise edible fungi?

they are one of the things that i don't want to take a risk on but would be interested in collecting my own wild mushrooms if i knew what i was doing.

i have these in my garden which look like wild field mushrooms, the underneath is not as black as i remember them from my child hood. what do you think are they edible?

I would recommend a foraging course

You don't get a second chance with some mushrooms

The top looks a bit scaley for it to be a field mushroom.

That's what I thought although the underside looks as if it might be. But if in doubt leave it out. You won't enjoy it anyway if you are concerned about being struck down after every mouthful 😜

It looks to me as if it could be one of these

If it is they are lovely and you are so lucky to have them in your garden.

I'd agree that a foraging course is a good idea.  There is nothing like the knowledge that an experienced forager has and they will usually point you towards some easy to identify species and also explain the habitat you are looking for.  The surroundings are all part of the id process.

OH does some foraging here and there and sometimes arrives home with ceps and what he calls purple meanies, but are actually Amethyst Deceiver.  They are tiny, but delicious.

He was taught by an experienced forager, but also has this book which is very good.  Collins 'How to identify Edible Mushrooms' ISBN 0-00-219984-X.

It covers edible and poisonous species by habitat - woodland, grassland and so on, with detailed colour illustrations so you know what you are looking for and what to avoid.  It also had lookalike colour illustrations for all the edible ones, so you can really make sure you are picking the correct species  :)

Not a Parasol as they have white gills. Looks like Agaricus Augustus, commonly known as the Prince. Edible, but I am no expert so get it checked.
Have eaten both parasols and the Prince though.
