The sweetcorn in the downsun area of the block have dimples in the top of the kernals.  I have gurgled this but it says that this happens when FIELD CORN starts to dry.  Is this the same for sweetcorn as those cobs aren't so well filled as the upsun side of the block?

Although the amount of sunshine and warmth affects how quickly the cobs will ripen, pollination itself can be affected by the position of the plant in the block, and the weather at the time they were producing pollen - the silks towards the downwind side will have had a better chance of receiving pollen from the upwind tassels than those at the upwind edge.

As to what the kernels turn out like, this is obviously dependent on the variety, and whether incompatible varieties (including field corn) were growing near enough to pollinate yours by mistake.

Have to confess though that I'm usually too busy producing my own dimples from the sheer pleasure of eating home grown sweetcorn to know whether the individual kernels are also dimpled (still waiting for mine, by the way.)
