Tomato disaster
« on: August 05, 2015, 11:35 »

The biggest truss I have ever seen on gardeners delight plant was just too heavy and as I forgot to support it folded over at the stem.

Will that truss now die as it is above the "fold". If it does will the toms that are on it still ripen?

I'd thin out the truss, by taking off the tiny toms, you'd be asking a lot of a damaged stem to support that much fruit.
I always put some wide sellotape around the stems when that happens - keeps the moisture in and any moulds out, and strengthens it a bit  ;)

Stick some sellotape round it :)  Seriously same thing happened to me and my Dad told me to do that, kept it alive

I agree with the others, but the last time that happened to one of mine, I put a bit of cane on it like a splint then taped it up.

All my trusses stems fold over unless I do some sort of cats cradle of string for each one. We are only talking about 4 or 5 toms per truss, so it is not as if i can thin then out.

Do others support every truss, or just let them get on with it and fold over?
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

If I've remembered to tie the stems up as often as I should, the trusses rarely bend over.

It only seems to happen when I've forgotten. Even the very long trusses on the Rosada haven't folded.
