Raspberries from seed.
« on: July 28, 2015, 09:27 »
Morning all.

Moving to a new plot following a recent house move. I want to put some raspberries in but all the canes I see on gardening sites and eBay etc seem so expensive for so few. Has anyone had any joy growing them from seed or can recommend a good seller?

I have had some Loganberry plants that were self sown from seed, and they have fruited for the first time this year (plants are three years old). They seem the same as the original plant's fruits.

Raspberries will certainly grow from seed similarly. I don't know however if the fruits would be the same as the mother plant's, as most raspberries on sale are the product of breeding programmes.

Canes do multiply quite quickly however, and two or three can easily become a large patch over the years you might wait for your seed grown raspberries to flower.

If you ask around on the new plot you might find someone wanting to get rid of some suckers - would be quicker than waiting for seed-sown plants!

2nd strangerachel's suggestion, but also look on the 'bay later in the year, they'll be cheaper then.
