Injury-free Goosberry Picking
« on: July 22, 2015, 18:30 »
I know this sounds like a bit of a cop out but does anyone have any tips?

I've used thick leather gloves but they don't allow the dexterity needed to pluck the fruit. I'm all for slow and carefully but even taking Ker-Plunk/Operation levels of time and concentration, I'm still spiked far more times than I want.

I'll persevere but jus wondered if anyone does any thing different?

Thanks!
G

I get the Plotfather to it!😏 actually...he puts on the gauntlets and opens up the branches enough for me to get my hand in without causing too much damage.

Best way is to delegate !

If your goosegog bush is the 'open goblet' shape it should be i find it easier to pick inside first when there is still the weight of fruit holding the goblet open, then pick the outside from the top down.

I still end up looking like i have been juggling cats !

Ditch the hairy, green, tart, spiteful beastie and get yourself a jostaberry. Not a spine to be seen and they make the best jam EVER!   :D :D :D

I put my waterproof anorak on while I'm picking, an old one though, as some of the prickles still get through and doesn't do the waterproofing any favours, but not so many scratches.  Looks a bit daft on a sunny day, but who cares..

I have concluded that the gooseberries taste better if you sustain injury picking them.  We have just taken on the derelict plot next to ours.  After strimming it revealed a gooseberry bush laden with huge juicy ripe fruit.  I think it is Invicta, judging by the lethal nature of the spikes.  Added bonus of a few nettles in between.

On our original plot we have a Champagne Yellow which comparatively speaking is fairly harmless.   We also have a Red Hinnomaki i rescued from Wilko's reduced rack 2 years ago.  It is absolutely lethal.

Still, the gooseberries are a very good crop this year.  So far I have made jam, ice cream, pie, jellies and frozen loads, given some to neighbours friends and relatives.  Still have 2 huge bowls left, more jam I think.

Leather gauntlet on left hand. Lift up branches with left, pick carefully with ungloved right hand. No pain - no gain!

i try to impress the lady plotholders by doing it barehanded :D

on a serious note i lift the branch to a vertical position so the fruits hang down and then pick, its not pain free but stops 90% of the stabs

Can you train them as a fan or espalier so you don't have to lift as many branches?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My 6 year old autistic grandson decided the picking of gooseberries was going to be his job. I showed him the thorns and warned him that they would hurt if they stick in him.
He picked the easy ones first, then got spiked.... ouch... another...ouch... and another..... ouch....
He then ran into the house and came back wearing his gloves... wollen gloves... ouch....ouch... ouch...
"Grampa! You better pick them." So i got spiked.
Roger.

That is what I do, but just any cloth gardening glove.

Leather riding gloves offer some protection while still being able to feel what you are doing
