Cucumbers going yellow
« on: July 16, 2015, 14:24 »
I am growing two Marketmore cucumbers in pots which I have done for a few years now without any problem  This year however as the cucumbers arrive when they are still tiny they are turning yellow and fizzling out.  I have had the odd one do this before but not all of them and I am not sure what is causing it.  Is it the weather or my watering!  Would be grateful for any advice please

Marketmore have to be pollinated to set fruit - sounds like that's not happening.

You could go round the flowers with a cheap artist's paintbrush to try to transfer pollen from male to female flowers if the bees aren't doing their job.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Marketmore don't seem to make tons of pollen, so it could be that other insects are getting to the male flowers first and eating it rather than the bees having a lie-in!

Agree that they don't usually require any help, but there's a first time for everything.  ;)

My marketmore had two female flowers but no males. I picked a couple of male gherkin flowers from my allotment and poked them into the flowers. One is growing, the other is doing nothing. 50% success. Now there are lots of flowers and the plants are putting out shoots in all directions.

Well I've got one cucumber almost ready for picking and quite a few more coming on one plant which, fingers crossed, so far seem to be alright.  It just seems to be one plant that doesn't want to play ball.  I don't mind as long as I get some.  thanks for all the help
