  hi, all , just bought an oldish one and know nothing about it.
first of all . the oil filler dosen't have a dipstick .. how do i know how much and what type do i put in ?
 next wheres the model number all i can find is on the deck  just states  (s)

also the blades don't swing are they supposed to ?
its a 5hp briggs n stratton engine if that  helps .. and lord i need help.

Most petrol mowers use SAE 30 oil.

I can't help with the specific questions about your machine because my Hayter is a new model with a B&S engine.

 hi the machine model  number has probably worn off, the engine number is usually  on the top cowling on the side   the oil filler on this model of engine is at the bottom of the engine on the sump the oil is filled to the top of the filler theres a weir in the engine and has to be filled to the top of the filler if you can see the bottom of the filler hole when bung is not in there is not enough oil in the engine  oil for engine SAE30 the blades should swing if 4 blades on a disc some had single bar blades 1 or 2 were adapted with chains and small blades (not recommended )like flails  if its a 5hp briggs and theoil sump filler is as described it could be 1983 -1990 the fillers had extension tubes after this date when the new range of  engines came in    jezza
