Think the broad beans have had it.

Really fed up as the black fly have mogadored the broad beans. I am pretty sure that the tiny broad beans are going to come to nothing. :(

But the broccoli/calabrese is doing well.
So it is not all doom and gloom.

Wonder if it is this years odd weather. My broad beans have been heavily infested  with black fly but for the first time I am harvesting good Calabrese.

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Your broccoli looks great. My beans have pretty much had it too - they are so infested my spraying and squidging really isn't making too much of a dent in the population. And I'd rather save the other beans from certain death by blackfly now.

Yep, that is what we are doing. I have bought a catering pack of broad beans from the cash and carry, and we are concentrating on keeping the runners, and the French black fly clear.

Never known a year like it for black fly. >:(
It seems there is always something to fight with in the garden. :(

Are the blackfly on broad beans the same as the ones that infest runner beans? I know they look the same, but do they have the same food preference?

Pulled up my broad beans today, not a single fully developed bean pod and a horrible sticky feel to them all - infested from top to bottom despite spraying, hosing and squidging.  They seem to have begun to stray across to the peas - never had them on peas before - and so sprayed heavily with soapy water.  Will keep a close eye on the climbing beans.

My broad beans and peas are coming along very nicely here.  However, my runner and French beans and courgettes and squash are looking poorly, affected by cold and shredded by wind.  I have had to re-sow the lot and very behind.

My broad beans have had flowers for what seems like ages, but not a single pot has set. No black fly or other pests, but no pods either 😧

I have just finished harvesting all my broad bean today, that is the advantage growing them in the autumn to avoid the pets

I sowed my over winter variety last November, lucky I got a crop before they were 'painted' with blackflies! I pulled them all up over a fortnight ago and now blackflies are occupying my french beans and lots of others

That is definatelt what I did wrong! :(

Last year I did the beans both ways, over wintering and spring sown and there wasn't any difference in the growth or yield.

So I thought this year I would just sew them in the Spring. Will go back to over wintering next year.

Just out of curiously, what do you all do with the plants that you pull up if they're still covered in black fly?

I chop them up and compost them in my hotbin - it's a sealed unit so flies can't get out/in and the compost gets up to about 40C.
