Barry's no-faff peas
« on: May 28, 2015, 12:53 »
I've mentioned these in the past.

Thought you might like to see how they're doing this year. (Thought of passing them off as mine, but there's another forum member on our site!).

Method - dig a trench with a shovel, (yes - shovel). Put peas in, cover & leave. No guttering, no pre-chitting etc.!

I suppose it's broadcast sowing in rows. The only protection is black cotton for when they are germinating, then nothing. I've tried the "then nothing" method and can't get away with it and I'm on the plot next but one!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

WOW, makes my row of peas look pitiful in comparison!

If I'm feeling brave I'll take a comparison photo - lol!

Seeds are from Moles - I think I mention them from time to time!

How do you stop them being eating by pests?  All my peas, (following your method), were all looking good until the pigeons got the shoots. Now I resowed the lot last weekend and had to net the whole patch.

As I said in the original post:

I tried this method in April this year, didn't know about the covering for germination though  >:(, guessing that's why only 20 peas out of 300 germinated, have now re-sown and have almost 100% success  :), guessing it was just too cold for the first sowings ??

These were not covered. There is only black cotton running up and down the rows. Sown mid April when it had warmed up a bit. If you only sowed 300, you would probably have only got about 6' of row!

So how many packets would you guess Barry sowed then?

Packets? They don't come into it!

One of the varieties is "Jaguar" and they come from Moles Seeds. (Sorry another plug!). My guess is that a kilo box would do about 2 rows, but that's not bad for just over a fiver. I shall try and remember to ask him when I see him next, but looking at the weather forecast, that won't be tomorrow!

Barry could keep a small nation in peas, from the look of that

The rows look very close together. Could be an illusion!  What is the recommended spacing for peas?

I'm not sure what you're implying there when you say "illusion". It's a genuine representation and there is no trick of the camera.

There is about 2'6" between the rows. That is about as high as the peas grow and that is what is recommended for row spacing.

Sorry I was not implying any camera trickery.

What I meant by illusion was, to me the rows look more like a foot apart with some of the plants virtually touching between rows.  This is obviously not the case as the rows are 2.5' apart as I would normally do.  I just wanted to check that I wasn't wasting space have a larger row spacing than needed.
