A year ago in October (Oct 2013) I planted two rows of summer fruiting rasp canes about a meter apart in the new plot. They were from an old well established patch in my mother's garden. Dont know variety. Last summer had reasonable crop but they were clearly a bit weakenedfrom the move (some had minimal root structure). I cut back old canes last winter and left the new growth, which was generally one or two new canes per plant. Over past month many of them have thrown up a huge amount of new growth around the base, with no obvious singular canes. Just lots of low level bushy and leafy growth. Is this normal? Are these just hundreds of new suckers? Should I just leave them all or dig some out? Makes weeding a nightmare!

Mine have done that. I think these are the canes which will produce next year's fruit when they get taller, so I am going to leave them alone.

Mine are doing that now too, but they are everbearing varieties and will actually fruit later in the season so I leave them alone. It does make weeding rather difficult though lol.

Mine too!! Just leaving them alone for more fruit next year!! My summer fruiting have taken longer than the autumn fruiting to re-establish themselves.
