Early Sweetcorn
« on: May 05, 2015, 11:06 »
I think I know the answer to this but needed to check first.

As I do not have a greenhouse I planted some sweetcorn in a propagator on the window sill late March and then moved to the windowsill out of the propagator.

They are now about 50cms tall and healthy  :D. The wife wants me to move them but I presume In should avoid the allotment until another 2-3 weeks because of the temperature.

I'm on a level with you and won't consider it until June.

I've only just sown my chitted seed.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yep - doubt they would survive the night temps. (and the wind around these parts today)
I'm in Devon where its generally milder than most parts - my 2 types of sweetcorn are only just showing in the GH and only just sprouting on tissue on a dish in the kitchen. I'm perhaps a little behind with them but I probably wouldn't put mine out till the end of
May / start of June. I also tend to use empty plastic pop bottles as individual cloches in the early stages on the plot.
If the OH demands it all I could suggest would be some sort of cloche and/or blowaway mini GH and a sheltered/sunny wall at home - might be enough.

You should not put them out until the risk of frost is gone. Anything below 10 deg C will see them sulk, especially big plants like these.

Put them outside in the day and bring them in at night. Where you put them at night does not have to be light so a shed or garage will do.
