I sow in pots because I once sowed directly into the ground and the mice had a sweet corn party. I do not suppose farmers mind losing a few to  mice but I only planted 20 so could not afford to feed the mice

Plant 4 inches deep and there should be no problem.
I did not plant 4" deep, prob only about 2" thanks for the tip. I would have thought that was too deep but I accept what you are saying.

That is the depth used in farm crops. It also means that maize sown now will not emerge too soon and be affected by frost/cold weather.
