I have two rose hedges each in a semi-circle that almost meet in the middle where I have a garden bench. At their outer ends I want to plant something slender that will grow about 4-5ft high which will be in full sun and needs to tolerate some run-off water from other parts of the garden plus the salt-winds I get here. I had two yews but they didn't survive though two others in other places have. I can dig in some grit to help with the drainage and evergreens would be my preference but just need some ideas.

Rosemary Miss Jessops Upright maybe, it likes full Sun and can get to 6ft, the grey leaves could protect it perhaps?

Holm Oak?  They are used as hedging near the sea as they have some tolerance of salt.  Can be clipped (as a hedge) so you could make it into a tear-drop shaped thingie - which is perhaps what you were planning to do with the Yews?

I like that idea as the grey leaves and blue flowers will contrast lovely with my pink roses plus I can use some for cooking. I have found it in Jackson's nurseries and Crocus - anyone know which is the best one to buy from as there is quite a difference in plant price - not too bothered about p+p - rather get a good quality plant. Jackson's is in a 2-3L pot at £4.99 each (p+p £7.99) and Crocus' is in a 1.5L pot at £8.99 (p+p £4.99).

My two plants arrived today by courier, very well-packaged, lovely new growth on them but I have put them in my greenhouse for the moment as they look like they need to be hardened-off before planting outside. The only drawback is the addition of their current booklet. Lovely planting ideas, some nice new ones as well to consider. Where's my credit card???
