Allotment in two halfs!
« on: April 08, 2015, 10:29 »
Hi folks,
My allotment is split in two when it comes to the sun, 1 half gets the sun all day, the other, due to trees get the sun first thing in morning and last thing at night so its in the shade most of the day.  I have no control over the trees, question is what veg can i grow in the "shady" part.  Hope that makes sense

Cheers Mal

Hi Mal I would think about salad leaves that don't like getting too hot in the summer. The other point is to ensure the soil is well fed and watered as trees may take a lot of nutrients. As to light you might want to erect a simple reflector of some sort that can throw sunlight onto to the shady part of the plot- nothing fancy just perhaps some old white board or a fence panel painted white.

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Part of my veg garden is sometimes in shade during the day. I tend to rotationally grow brassicas there as they don't go over as fast as they would in full sun. I can get away with leeks, and also sweet corn if the sun can get to them as they are tall plants.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I agree that brassicas and lettuce do well in the shade as will spinach, beetroot, broad beans.  In fact most veg will be fine but they may take a bit longer, just avoid the more tropical stuff like tomatoes.

Not veg, but lots of fruit do well in shade, eg currents and raspberries.

I've got dwarf French beans & gooseberries in the shady bit of my plot. Plus some redcurrants in pots. When they lived at my Mum's they were in shade for half the day and gave really good crops.

We found our Blueberry bush did very well in quite deep shade under a tree last year, helped prevent the container drying out and we got well over 10lb of fruit from one bush.
We just made a point of feeding it well.
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....
