Onions Gone Squidgy
« on: March 27, 2015, 12:19 »
I sowed some onion sets in module pots a few months ago and put them in the coldframe. Ive only just got the ground ready for them and they have been in the pots far too long.
When i just inspected them i found that the actual onions have gone (for want of a better word) squishy.
It seems like the sets have sprouted then the onion has rotted. Im on the brink of throwing them away because i need the pots and the coldframe space but I thought I would ask you guys what you think? Cheers.

That's what they do.

They use up the food stored in the bulb to make root and leaf. They will continue to make mostly leaf until the day lengths shorten, after which they will bulk up again.

Oh - and you planted sets!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD.
I had no idea that in the process of taking nutrients from the bulb that it would shrink and go soft. (every days a school day)
And yea, planted even! (Doh) 😅
