Chrissy, a Google on images, not the web,  produced this!

Sounds fabulous!

Yes, it was called Russian Cake.

All the bakers around where I lived in London made it on a Monday from the left over cakes from Saturday. It often had a thin pastry base.

Looks great I'd never heard of it. Deprived child I was. It was all meat and potato pies in my childhood, not made by my mother I may add.

Ooh! I remember those - Mum always bought them on Monday, they were made with sponge cakes left un-sold from Saturday's baking  :)

I think people are far too "sophisticated" nowadays to buy recycled cake, no matter how delicious :D

They don't know what they're missing !

Ah, memories! My mother used to make little plain sponge cakes in paper cases, and when they started to get a bit dry and stale, rather than throw them away she broke them up in a bowl and poured hot custard over them. Oh how I loved that, especially cold when the custard had soaked in.
We did that then, like scraping the mouldy bit off the top of a jam pot, or cutting mouldy bits off cheese. Amazing how we managed to survive without sell/use by dates.

My dad allways cut the mould off cheese and bread and im still standing , i feel like a failure if i have to throw food out which is a very rare  event in my house , i think having so much food choice is whats causing so much waste , even my veg left overs becomes sunday soup for monday dinner .

We rarely, if ever, throw food away. It's far too precious resource for that. What doesn't get eaten very quickly gets frozen and ends up as part of another meal. My wife is queen of freezer bottom meals.

Well, when was the last time anyone had any bread pudding..?

About a month ago, at the request of one of my granddaughters!!

I had forgotten about Tipsy Cake though... I seem to remember it being flavoured with some sort of fake liqueur taste. Maybe that was why it had that name?
