Climbing frame for hen
« on: December 16, 2014, 08:06 »
My Blackrock likes to perch high up, not least to get away from my other hen who bosses her round most of the day.  She sits on top of the coop, but I'd like to provide something else as well.

I'm not practical, but will have a go.  Has anybody any ideas for a simple outdoor perching structure?

I think this is probably an odd question, but thought I'd ask!
Many thanks.

I used the mature stalks of my sunflowers, which gave me sticks of 6 feet long. My chooks loved them!

You are not alone - I thought of it too!

There will be lots of dead straight sticks in the woods and you can tie the ends together to make 2 stick pyramids - v. sturdy.  Then horizontal perches between.  A roofy thing on top would be nice and protect form possible pirds of prey.

Or freecycle a childs swing frame/climbing frame and attach sticks...

I got some old hardwood garden chairs from the tip and they sit on the arms.

I use old tree stumps - branches or old shelves from car boot - you could make something from old pallets too

I had an old rickety wooden bench which was perhaps getting too fragile for  me to risk sitting on it ever again - there are slats on the seat, arm rests and a back rest which I used to fasten a round fence post at one end with the other to a tree.  This forms a sort of climbing frame up to a "balcony" which they all crowd on just so they can watch my kitchen door for signs of a possible treat winging its way to their run LOL

Oops posted on wrong post!!! Christmas mush brain! It is generally possible to pick up unwanted garden furniture on Freecycle or Freegle, especially of the plastic variety. Using old chairs gives a perching point and summer shade. Also a plastic table gives shade, shelter and a hideaway if raptors are around - they generally feel more secure. :)

Also if space two wooden pallets placed in an inverted vee and tied at the top. Perching space and shelter. :)

Thank you for the fab ideas.  I have some old tree stumps that I didn't know what to do with.  And some old pallets.

Sassy, I also have some old plastic garden chairs, do I bury the legs, so they don't topple over when the chuck perches on the back?

The hens are going to love this! :D

I did not have a problem with the chairs just placed on the ground, however, you would need to move if gales are threatened. Some chairs have an area at the base of the legs where you could drill through and peg down. :)
