Sick hen? Impacted crop and confused?
« on: October 22, 2014, 14:51 »
My battery breed hen Sigourney has impacted crop, so I've been treating her for that, no food, apple cider vinegar, oil down the throat and massaging her crop. It has helped, got her crop down a bit, but it's still rock hard. I tried getting her to eat some maggots but she wasn't having any of it. She's now acting dizzy, sitting down all the time refusing to walk? I've had her for just over 4 years and bought her at point of lay, so she's about 4 1/2 years old. Never had any health problems, my best layer and the most intelligent of the flock. Anyone have any ideas what's wrong?

Try drip feeding her some diluted Epsom salts via a syringe, that gets things moving in hens too!  Also a bath in the stuff can work wonders for a hen that's feeling under the weather.  Worst case is that she is nearly the end, hope not though, as it is so sad to lose them.

I had hens and naturally got attached to them - your situation is a tough one.

May I very politely point out this link which may be useful to you and your hen?

I gave her about 2ml of diluted Epsom salts of the 6ml I had prepared, she decided she did not like that and would rather get better, did a huge poop ate about 10 maggots and about an hour after that her crop was nearly empty! I'm going to give her some pellets in the morning and pop her back outside with her friends.
On a side note, looked through my partners records (he likes to keep note of the chooks: breed, when we got them, or their hatchday etc) and she's only 2 1/2 to 3 years old, but thank you for the link anyway, we've certainly lost birds from our flock so I do understand they're very delicate little creatures :) but Sigourney lives another day :)

That's wonderful news! Thank goodness for records! I hope she lives to see a few more summers yet! Well Done! (That news has made my morning!)

Great news! My hen only had a small dose of Epsom salts, and then ran around the garden like 'new' again.  Keep an eye on her though - sure you will.

might be useful to check poop for what caused the impacted crop. Is there enough grit available as the ground is more wet, or mown grass left or hay available for other pets.
