Does anyone here have a fig tree?
« on: August 09, 2014, 17:34 »
I am looking into buying a fig tree or two and just wondered if anyone here has them? Or if there are certain ones I should avoid? I have seen a good offer on Amazon but don't want to buy them if they will not produce fruit?

Many thanks.

Used to have Brown Turkey at the old house, lots of great figs once they get established.
They can get big but are easy to prune.
Easy to grow from cuttings if you can scrounge a bit !
If you have a sunny spot spare go for it !

I've got brown turkey, it produces lots of fruit but not all get to the eating stage. I've just given my last couple of cuttings away or you could have had one. I should be doing more in the winter all being well if you can wait til next year?

Has any one had any success with growing Brown Turkey in a container? This is something on my 'to grow list' but I dont want to waste my time. I certainly dont have the space to grow one in the ground.

Yes  :D  Mine produced about a dozen fruits this year.  They were pea sized last autumn and I put the tree in the unheated greenhouse over winter.  They have all been eaten now and it has some decent sized fruits coming again.

As soon as there is space, the tree is going in the greenhouse again to try and ripen those.  If they don't ripen, I'll pick them off and concentrate on getting the pea sized ones through to next year  :)

Thanks Guys I have bought 2 brown turkey trees from amazon for £9.99 plus postage. Thank you for the offer of a cutting snowdrops but I couldn't resist ordering lol. My plan is to keep them in pots and to keep them in the greenhouse when the weather drops in temperature fingers crossed I get some lovely figs in a year or two :-) xxx

how big do brown turkey grow?

i was given a put together and pin down type one (don't know what they're called) but couldn't really think of what i could put in it (already have a 25ft poly tunnel). think it's about 5 1/2 ish ft tall, 4ft ish wide, 6ft ish long, would a fig tree or two feasibly fit in there? if need be i don't mind crawling around to harvest the fruit.

any body got any pics of how big and the shape they grow, they will be grown in the ground if that makes any odds.

Brown Turkey grow 12ft plus high no problem!
Mine at that height was 6-8 ft wide.

maybe i'll look for smaller / dwarf varieties. i'm sure i've heard of many people grow them in poly tunnels to get a longer season.
