Flippin' slugs
« on: July 12, 2014, 08:21 »
- had about 40 Dwarf French Beans out in pots on the patio table, sprinkled liberally with slug pellets. We get one misty night and about 20 of them have been munched through, leaving the leaves uneaten on some plants; just chomped through!

Too late to sow again. I was trying to grow them on a little bit before planting out to give them a fighting chance against slug damage. May as well have sown direct.

- what's a gardener supposed to do!

They are a expletive deleted nuisance aren't they!

it's not too late to sow dwarf beans again though, if you haven't given up the will to live  :nowink:

Are you sure it is slug damage, if the leaves are being left uneaten  it could be cutworm .

Every time I go to the plot I hoe it all and then scatter slug pellets allover. This year they have been everywhere. Not any cabbage white's, but slugs....

Slug pellets need to be sprinkled on sparsely to be effictive. I believe if you put loads round it actually encourages the slugs.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Well something has eaten through a load of my carrots and just left the tops lying on the raised bed and nibbled the tops off my only 2 decent chilli plants which are in pots in my little greenhouse.  The side shoots on the chilli's are growing, but don't know if its too late for them to come to anything.

You're right, don't know what to do for the best do you?

I did put pellets down sparsely too!   >:( >:(

My pot neighbour told me today that slug pellet sales were up 75% this year.... I've lost loads of root seedling stuff, my brassicas are lovely though- they couldn't get inside the netting  cover and the pellets dealt with the ones that were in there to sart with! :D

I must say that although I had horrendous slug problems earlier in the season, the past few weeks have been much better. The drier weather will have helped along with adjacent overgrown plots had been cleared so there are fewer places for them to hide but I must admit I'm still surprised but this.

Slugs have caused some devastation this year, about 2/3 of my runner beans, red cabbage, borecole, peppers, carrots, they have utterly destroyed a marrow plant, the list goes on.  I have spent a fortune in copper tape to protect my remaining peppers in containers.  Slugs are eating faster than anything seems to grow.
