What can I Plant after onions?
« on: July 07, 2014, 18:33 »
Hi Guys/Gals,

What can I Plant after my onions have been harvested?  I've red somewhere that potatoes can go in straight after is this right?  I was thinking of planting my Christmas spud.

Thanks Dan
Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

The most important thing is to rotate I just make sure I follow on from a different group so that would be fine.

Spuds in the ground at that time of year aren't likely to be successful as they will get frosted.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Why do so many folk feel the need to kick the pants out of their soil?

There's nothing wrong with giving it a rest!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You could put a few lettuces & radishes in or some French bean plants if you start them off indoors first, but as DD says the soil needs a break now & then so maybe a green manure

I know I just get desperate to see something growing. Maybe the rising cost of food has something to do with it too.

Eggsackerlee right  :D

What goes in after my onions is manure, then a sheet of black plastic around November when the ground is good and wet and that's it until spuds next March  :D

That's what is in my rotation plan for a reason -- the soil has to get a rest sometimes

Werks fer me  :nowink:

You have to think further than the short term, though!

This is my mid year resolution, manure and black plastic waiting, I am going to try the above

I guess it also depends upon the size of your plot, what is deemed as full plot on some sites would be twice the size of ours, I don't normally try and push through two crops but I can see why some might. I think that I will carry on with what I have always done crops come out and muck goes on.

I hate to see empty soil one out one in where possible with loads of manure of course. nature doesn't leave empty soil.
