how long can you store new potatoes?
« on: July 07, 2014, 15:31 »
i seem to have over done the amount of new potatoes this year and could really do with digging the rest of them up.

i've still got a bucket of them left from the last lot i dug up, so any i dig up will need to be stored for a while.

i know news don't store as long as mains, but how long will they store for? i'm prob looking at needing to keep them for 2 - 3 months would this be too long?

thanks for any opinions.

2-3 months will be fine - keep them in a dark store, somewhere cool (not necessarily cold)

What variety are they - some may store better than others.

I have also got a huge amount still eating the rocket but then have second early s.  I don't have a garage I have a shed.  I would also be keen to get advice on whether I am best storing them in boxes or potatoe sack.

I store mine in Hessian sacking once they are dry (about an hour in the sun on a home made drying frame) and this is then put into a paper sack and stored in my shed. Cool and dark is the secret. Still using my arran pilots dug up 6 weeks ago and none have turned green as yet. if they do turn they will go for seed next year
May the fork be with you

If you intend to store them cut the tops off and wait 2 weeks before lifting so that the skins set.

Cardboard wine boxes (the ones that 6 bottles come in, not the 'pour a glass at a time' ones) work fine for potatoes. You may need the odd piece of paper/card to block off any slits where light can get in. Not that we have a ready supply of wine boxes, as if we would....

I use those tray type boxes (with lids) that had fruit in from the supermarkets - I lay newspaper down on the bottom to block off holes, spread the potatoes out and put a wad of newspaper on top.  The boxes also stack on top of each like a set of drawers - I cut a small flap on the side so that I can get into the box without having take the others off  ;)
