Attaching hosepipe to water butt?
« on: June 07, 2014, 15:40 »
Hi all,

Please can anyone advise me on what kind of connector I need to attach a stretch of hose to the tap on my water butt?

The butt is a Sankey 210 litre standard one.

Many thanks!

Pim.

If the ordinary push on ones don't fit the one with a jubilee clip should work

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOSE-PIPE-TAP-CONNECTOR-FOR-ROUND-TAPS-/281352457191?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Garden_Plants_Bird_Bath_Feeder_CV&hash=item4181e9cbe7

Thinking about it, if the hose can be pushed onto the tap (depends on the hose size) then all you need is the jubilee clip  ;)

It will go on easier if you warm the pipe in hot water first ;)

Thanks all. I've tried a push on and it works but a bit leaky, so will try your suggestion, Tony. :)

Cheers,

Pim.

If the tank is raised off the ground you could syphon it out using the same hose, but the delivery end needs to be below the bottom of the tank where the  other end of the hose needs to be.All my waterbutts  are linked by syphon pipes and works great. If you go down the push on road and the hose has a mesh in walls as well as warming the end a smack or two with a hammer will help.

This post brought back the rigmarole I went through to get a trickle hose attached to my shed water butt.  I must have had more fittings than Bee and Cue but could I get it sorted out.  I tried every conceivable permutation but nothing worked.  My 10 year old niece turned up, played with the various fittings for a few minutes, and soon had it sorted

The hose didn't work too well though.  Lack of mains pressure maybe, plus it got bunged up quickly.  I now have some old popsock over the downpipe :)

I just used an old caravan water pump, by taking the socket end that plugs into the caravan off, and connecting the wires to a 12v battery, a hoselock joiner fitted into the caravan pump hose, just drop the end into the waterbutt, connect the battery and its nearly as good pressure as it would be from the tap.

The syphon method needs no bits ,just the hose. As long as the bottom of the tank is raised ,higher the better it works well ,I must admit to having been a water engineer in my dim and distant past sorry :nowink:
