Abandoned Chick
« on: June 03, 2014, 13:17 »
My Orpington/Brahma hatched out a tiny Dutch Bantie egg yesterday.  All seemed okay until today.  The chick started moving around in the in the broody box, and now Mother has no interests in it.  I brought it inside for a while to get it warm as the poor thing was shivering.  I held gently in my hands and showed it how to drink.  It took a few swallows, but was very unhappy, chipping the whole time.  So I took it back to the nest and put her under another broody hen that hasn't hatched any chicks out yet.  I don't know if this will work or not, but will check in a few minutes.  I don't have an old fashioned light bulb to put the chick under, or a hot water bottle.     So worried!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Thank you, Snoop.  We did a big switch around of hens, eggs and chick.  Now the chick and her mother are alone in the broody arc and the other broody hen in another hen house with all the unhatched eggs.  Mother is finally sitting on her chick to keep her warm.  Fingers crossed that this works!

Mother and chick are doing just great now.  Thank you all for your support.  My other broody hen is ready to hatch out her chicks tomorrow.  Would it be okay to put her and her chicks in the same broody coop/run with this hen and her chick?

I have had two together successfully (one was an experienced broody and the other a novice and the experienced one took control of both sets of chicks most of the time) but very often a hen will attack the other hens chicks.
