Overwintered onions - when do they bulk up?
« on: May 17, 2014, 19:18 »
I have Electric and Radar sets planted in the autumn.  They look very healthy but quite a lot on the small side.  My only other attempt at overwintered onions a couple of years ago with nil success due to exceptional winter weather.   Will they bulk up much between now and harvest?   Or are they just going to be very small?  Is it too late to provide a feed?   They had a good feed of comfrey tea a month ago.

The overwintering varieties are not for storing-your main crop are for that. I've grown Japanese variety senshu?
At the moment they are bigger than my main crop but too small to use.

It looks as if you have quite a lot so you may be using them late July and August. Yes they will bulk up and become a good size. While they are still growing I give them a nitrogen feed and afterwards I use my wood ash, which contains potash.

They will be growing quite fast now the warmer weather is here.  Mine are about the same size as usual, here's a picture for comparison

I am starting to use them now as some are going to seed.

I am not intending to store them for long, I have spring planted from sets and seed for that.

Thanks for the picture Annen.  I am quite encouraged as mine are around a similar size, possibly slightly bigger and relieved to hear they will now bulk up quickly.  None have gone to seed thankfully.  I just need to wait a little longer.

I only grow winter onions to have as green onions and start every 1st May - normally but this and last year a couple of weeks late due to the late seasons. They are great with white sauce, stews and also on the BBQ.. By the time they are finished my maincrop are ready. I occasionally have to buy a packet or two of onions otherwise we are self sufficient.

Mine are about the same size as yours and yes, some of mine are going to seed this year - more than in the past. Perhaps because the winter was mild?

Mine are starting to go to seed, but I grow them to eat as green onions like Gavin, so will just eat them faster  ;)  It may be the unusual winter weather, but my white ones are fine, it is the reds that are going. Red onions are more inclined to bolt according to the old boys on the plot.

We had some last night roasted in the oven.  They went in on a baking tray with asparagus (also homegrown) and were very lightly coated in olive oil, salt and pepper.  They were fab  8)

Mine are about 2-3cm across at the moment, and I've decided to use them as green (salad) onions this year.  Onions are very cheap (even the frozen ones, which is what you'd have to do for autumn sets as they don't store well), whereas salad onions are at least £1 for 2-3.

Welcome to the green onion club Mogs  :D

You're right about the salad onions and the overwintered ones give you a supply much earlier than trying to grow proper spring onions from seed  :)
