Hi all,

I've been meaning to ask this in quite some time.. I've got a really old lawn mower and strimmer which my parents gave me when i moved out (Both Flymo, but i cannot for the life of me remember the model numbers).

I've kept them both in good shape cleaning them after each use and ensuring the lawnmower blade is always kept clean, sharp(ish) and good nick..

The strimmer however has recently started to not cut the grass very well, it kinda .. tickles the grass and generally knocks it down flat.

I've taken apart the strimmer, cleaned and re-greased everything and fed it new line but it still has the issue..

Does it matter about the thickness or the different lines? - I don't know what size I've got but i can't see anywhere that says "only use 2mm thick line" for example.

I would like to buy a new one but unfortunately my outgoings are too high at present.

Any ideas / comments / recommendations would be greatly received!

does the strimmer have a centrifugal clutch, if so its possible the clutch is slipping and the head is just freewheeling, thus as soon as you ask it to do any work the clutch slips and transfers no power to the line. either that or if the head is angled it could be the gears inside have worn and are not engaging properly.

Hi Grendel,

I'm not 100% sure.. but it gives me something to look at tonight! I'll have to get the model number as well to help on my search! - If not it may be a manual hand jobby for a while lol..

Looked like it may have been to do with the carbon brushes..



I've cleaned them up as they were actually stuck in the chamber from old age..

Will let you know if they improve upon use..
