Not much luck with brassicas.
« on: April 23, 2014, 09:39 »
I never seem to do well with brassicas, but this year, I've had some cabbage come along nicely. I've had them protected with some fine chickenwire and they looked well. Until last night. I took the netting off yesterday as they are getting to a size where pigeons won't bother them. This morning, the neighbours cat from 2 doors away has decided to dig them all up for me under cover of darkness. I am so happy.

Oh no! Leave the netting on next time. There is always something out there that will have a go at your veg. If it's not a pigeon or cat it will be a fox or mouse or slug  :(

Pigeons bother mine no matter what size they are! It's never safe to un-net them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have four cats, one of which is a dog in disguise because she just loves digging!  Any veg I plant is covered with some clematis netting suspended about 6" by tying the corners onto canes inserted in the ground. When they have grown sufficiently, I raise the net a bit more until I think they will be ok. By that time, the soil isn't newly-dug so they don't tend to bother them. Brassicas are always planted out and covered by cut-out plastic milk bottles until the leaves have grown well out of the top but not too much so I can't get them off. What a shame, though - so sorry.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I never un-net my brassicas. They might produce huge robust plants in the end, but they seem to have more enemies than anything else grown on the plot.
