Making my own pots
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:55 »
I've been having a look at making some pots for this years seedlings (newspaper ones) http://www.geocities.com/newspaperpots/

But was wondering if anyone had an extra or alternative advice as I've not done it before, don't want to find them falling apart a few weeks down the line :?  :?

Thanks Rosemary, I think I'll get folding tonight!
Is it ok to plant out the paper pots and all when transplanting? (I won't do it with root crops)

Yep - that's the idea. I don't transplant root crops. but I'd leave them on those as well to avoid root disturbance.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Will the newspaper decompose enough to not affect the root growth?

That surprises me, but I suppose the news paper is alot thinner! I did ok with the peat pots last year, so maybe newspaper isn't so daunting after all :D

I'll get round to doing some photo's on how I do mine, much easier than being an origami master

I ripped the bottom off my peat pots when planting to help the roots last year.

Did anyone ever try to make pots out of dung?

I've started them somewhen last year and they're drying out at the moment. The thought behind it was, that they're not only compostable but also hopefully supply nutrients at the same time (ok, I admitt it: I'm simply enjoying the dung work, made fire dung last year too, just have to refine the method cause it's very time consuming)
