Adding shredded paper to beds?
« on: March 25, 2014, 18:39 »
I've got 3 years of invoices to shred, which will give me a few bin liners of confetti. I'm keeping some for my compost heaps, but can I add them to the soil in my raised beds?

Would it do any good as soil improver? I'm on fairly heavy clay so I'm keen to add anything that will lighten it.

And sorry, I know it's probably a noddy question.

It's going to blow everywhere, even if you dig it in.  Unless you completely bury it!

If you have a bean trench bury it in there.

Wet it, turn it into the soil as best you can, and hope that there are no jigsaw addicts with criminal tendencies out and about in your area at the moment.

It probably won't turn your soil into the 'perfect light friable loam' overnight but it won't do any harm either.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks all, and for bearing with a very basic question. I'm on a steep composting curve...

I will wet it thoroughly - I was in my own outdoor snowglobe last year by forgetting that important detail.  :D

Mostly I compost my shredded paper because I can't find enough 'browns' for it.

If you have chickens, shredded paper is also excellent bedding material.

All our bank statements went on the compost heap!

Interesting to see that many of the lengths still show the magic 'OD'...:0(

I got a paer shredder for Christmas and accumulated about 20 pedal bin bags of stuff which is currently in my GH waiting to be put in my pea and bean trench. We have also used some as bedding material for our geese and hens.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Shredded paper is excellent for staring bonfires fires if you are allowed them.  Slightly off topic, sorry.

I maybe bucking the trend here:
Invoice paper is office paper, and when it gets wet remains a clump which nothing will break it down. My first shredder made 3mm strips and using glossy magazines made very good artificial straw for the strawberries. It didn't break down, lasted throughout the season and provided a good mulch.
I use all my newspaper and cardboard  in trenches and compost heaps, because it readily absorbs water and breaks down easily. I put it to one side until the summer when I have a plentiful supply of greens.
My office paper including envelopes all goes in the council bin.

I used mine as mulch for under the strawberries too.  It blew about a bit until I wet it and then at the end of the season I scraped off what remained and put it on the compost heap.  The only thing I didn't like was that it is very white and stands out like a sore thumb on the plot.

We use yellow paper for the BACS request cover sheet (small charity, run by a luddite) so my bag of confetti is custard coloured.  :D
