sprouting greens
« on: March 20, 2014, 12:26 »
Due to a knee op I couldn't harvest many greens and now they're all sprouting.
But who needs to grow purple sprouting broccoli when you can have sprouting brussel sprout and sprouting black kale. Both are delicious and tender (stalks/leaves/flowers and all) and have the flavour of the original greens!!
You can't buy them in the shops and if you could they'd probably cost a fortune.
Next year a part of my crop will definitely be left to sprout!

I'm doing the same, my psb didn't come to anything, but I've got sprouting kale and also where I've harvested cabbages I'm getting nice shoots from the stumps. I'll remember to leave the stumps alone next year and get a free crop.

The problem as I see it is that these plants can be in the way. I dug up my sprouts to make way for potato trenches. However I do plant my PSB next to the paths so that they do not interfere with my current work.

Yes, sprouting brassicas are one of the most useful crops as they crop during March, April and May when there is very little else ready. Choose a crop to follow them for planting out in June, such as leeks, or late crops of peas and beans.

Note to self - 16 PSB is too many.   Can't eat the stuff fast enough.  Does it freeze?  Just four plants this year.

It does freeze well, yes  :nowink:

and sprouting shoots of brussels sprouts have been this year's delicious surprise bonus crop here, too  :D
