I am using the small 1/2ltr and they are ok for these, I would be wary of any bigger sizes as I would be worried about the plastic's integrity. Garden bargains have solid 30ltr tubs that I will be using for spuds, I've found them to be very sturdy.

The 17 litre pots are perfect for one seed spud. I'll be using fifty of em this year. I still cut a trench, fork it over with some organic matter and BFB, and lay the poly pots on top. Back fill the trench to the top of the bags. The spuds will all form perfectly in the bags, and will root into the trench beneath for moisture and nutrient. The fact that they are "under ground" means watering is far less of a problem than bags or pots above ground.
Any good compost will grow decent spuds. I use peat as a base "cough", because spuds love growing in it.

A lot of show growers use the 17l polypots, one seed per pot. Iain at JBA reckons 5lb+ per  pot is a reasonable expectation.

I use everything from plastic flower tubs upwards with excellent results. Watering can be a problem with a lot of them though I suspect this year we should be OK.
