I am just about to plant a new asparagus bed, my former one not having been very productive!  I want to get a 'collection' of about 15/20 crowns, can anyone recommend the best varieties to try for long production and good cropping qualities please.  We are in the South of England so climate is (usually!) pretty mild.

Not an easy one to answer - you can choose between white, green or purple spears, whether they are thick, thin or medium, and also there are some which will tolerate heavier soils than others.

The F1 "all-male" varieties tend to be more prolific because they don't waste energy producing berries when allowed to grow on to produce the ferns.

Thank you I wondered about the F1 varieties.  Ideally I'd like a mix so that I can prolong the picking season.

Don't know if you can get Jersey Supreme over there but it's the one I'm after for some replacements. It's one of  the all male hybrids that's a heavy producer.
