what to feed onions and garlic
« on: February 11, 2014, 18:50 »
My onions are looking sorry for themselves I am wondering whether I should take them out and plant New ones.  I have some in the greenhouse that look much better.  The soil is very wet but not flooded.  What should I give them to help them grow well.    My garlic seems to be coming along well I think at some point last year I added potash. Is this the best thing to encourage garlic and when should I do it.

Its just the wet that makes them look bad... they will perk up. Nothing much other than roots are a bit active now.

My autumn onions are up and sprouted and moving along OK.  I gave them a feed of blood fish and bone a week or so ago.  They appeared to perk up although I may have been imagining it.  Ill give them another feed end March or April when (hopefully) the wet weather has gone.  I want them out soon after mid summer as possible.  Hope this helps

I think that any feed you put on now will be washed out before the crop can take it up. I'm leaving things alone at the moment rather than walk on the soil. It's six and two threes whether anything you plant now will do any good at all.

Perhaps it will stop raining and then we can all make a proper decision.

If the bed has been thoroughly prepared, onions won't need any more feed.
Over wintered onions always look ropey at this time of year.

In between gusts of wind I did manage to get some sulphate of potash on one of my beds of garlic. Nothing scientific from me but that's what the garlic farm recommend on the bumph that comes with their garlic. Also the tips of mine are looking pretty yellow so I thought they needed perking up.

I put potash on my garlic last year but cannot remember when.  I also put it on the strawberry patch. What about the onions when it stops raining is chicken pellets ok
