What is the best way to organise seeds
« on: January 26, 2014, 21:39 »
I have a huge bag of seeds and I am thinking about the best way to organise them.  I have them in individual envelopes with the different variety written on.  I then put in my diary when I need to plant a crop.   What do other people recommended is the best way to organise your seeds.  I have read some people organise them in date to plant order rather than crops.  I really need to stop acquiring seeds.  I have so many and then I bought loads at a gardening centre who were setting them off.  Thanks

I'm afraid mine are in a big round sweet tin mixed up together.

I have mine sorted into months by cardboard dividers, when they've been sown they go to the back of the box - or into the next month if they need repeating. Mind you March/April/May get a bit overcrowded  ::)

Werks fer me  :)

Oh crikey!  I've done it by alphabetical, sowing order, family group (seems to work best for me) and had numerous boxes, file folders and now they're thrown (by family folder) in an old trug!  :)

I store mine in large plastic folders in their family groups or lumped under greenhouse/ roots etc.
At this time of year I then move them out into a monthly sowing folder

I sort mine in plant groupings.   I did have a biscuit tin, but outgrew that.  Now in a wicker picnic basket, with cardboard dividers.  So all the brassicas in one section, all the legumes, all the alliums etc etc.  seems to work for me.

Do what works best for your memory. Mine are in groups of things that my head thinks fits together nicely. Which does mean some of the brassicas are mixed about, but it works for me. I also have a big spreadsheet that sorts out seed stocks, planting dates and quantities, costs and produce value. But I am geeky and like spreadsheets.  :)

No particular order I just look at my veg books to see what I can sow when and pick out the packets adhoc.

I put my seeds in plastic re-sealable bags brought a few hundred for 2 quid off line and then I label them up. I found leaving them in the seed packets they spill everywhere!!

I had 2 tins full so I sorted them into 'things I eat' and 'things I don't eat' pile. I've then grouped all the things I eat pile into sowing months. Finding it much easier do far. Just need to find a home for the things I don't eat pile but most are out of date so I guess it's either the bin which seems wasteful or sow to give away

My veg seed packets are filed alphabetically (sort of, all types of beans are 'B' and those mysterious packs of 'mixed salad leaves' go in 'S'!)

Flower seeds are all together at one end of the box in random order, partly because there aren't that many of them, but mostly because I often can't remember what I've got and what they're called anyway, so there's not much point filing them alphabetically!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Bought some seed packet shaped plastic tubs with coloured lids from Wilkes. Put the veg in one, herbs in another, salad stuff went into one.  The flowers are in one of those lovely seed tins that I got as a present with the big packets of seed of beans and peas :D

I sort mine in family order.

Brassicas
Cucurbits
Alliums
Flowers
Legumes
Others
Etc.....

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !
