Rhubarb question(s)
« on: January 07, 2014, 21:28 »
Never been much of a fruit grower, in fact isn't rhubarb a vegetable ?.......anyway I noticed today that mine is already showing. First question: as I forced it last year should I not do so this time?   Second question: I really would like to move it to a better spot, is it too late?     Third question: whichever I do, should I now put muck over / around it ?  Steve

In order:

1. Give it  a rest from forcing this year

2. You can move it now still, just make sure you don't snap the growth buds off

3. Much round it not on it

and it'll do you proud  :D

100% agree with sunshineband. In fact the weather will get colder and any time up to the end of February is fine.

As Sunshineband says, don't put any mulch, manure or whatever too near the rhubarb crown it will only cause it to rot. 10cm away from it should be fine

Best spot for rhubarb IMO is next to the compost container (move whichever is easiest ) it does not mind partial shade and the nutrients from the compost heap mean little other feeding is needed . ;)

I've always wondered why this is the case for most plots at the lottie.
Hope you don't mind me asking a rhubarb question .......
A fellow plot holder has mulched his rhubarb with manure and then covered this with wood chippings. Why would he do that? I thought that wood chippings were only for blueberries and acidic loving plants.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Maybe to retain moisture (It must surely stop raining one day) as I cannot believe he/she would need to suppress weeds under rhubarb.

Or they might just like the look of it I suppose

It doesn't do any harm then? We have loads of wood chippings at the  lottie so if it is ok to use them to mulch rhubarb I think I'll do the same.

Rhubarb doesn't need much to be honest.

Prefers a shady area as this gives much more growth.no need to force as it tends to give thin shafts.

Yes you can still move. If it's a bit big just hack in half with a spade, then you have two crowns.

I've never manured or mulched and last year I had over 30lbs of stalks from three crowns. A good job we love it!  :D
