Can I use any sharp sand for sowing and potting ,hubby has a bag in the shed .

Yes - it's better than builder's sand which is finer and can clag up and impair drainage.

If it isn't labelled as washed it's probably a good idea to wash it a few times in fresh water in case it's contaminated with salt (unlikely, but possible.)

Good, it will disappear from the shed tomorrow.

You will generally find that the bagged sharp sand from your builders merchants or DIY outlet is already washed. I've been using it for years with no problems.
