Hi I am a leeds man living in west sussex , have got two lotties in billingshurst , I am not used to deer , has any body got any tricks to stop them , I do like venison but that is a last  resort dont want to fence everywhere.mal.

I assume as you mention allotments you are asking about edible plants rather than flowers and shrubs? I have a good list somewhere if I can find it, of ornamental plants they don't like. But, if as I suspect, you mean vegetables etc, I think it will be more a question of finding ways to protect your crops.

Hi I do grow flowers also, I am going to try sowing marigolds and garlic onions and lavender round both plots, with rags soaked  in diesel or jeyes fluid .

Deer are extremely determined creatures. If you can't or won't fence, then you must cage in the specific beds/areas with strong wire mesh and metal posts. I think poultry wire would work provided there's good enough clearance so deer can't get their tongues through the mesh holes and pull up leaves, whatever. They'd also have to be high enough that deer simply won't step on them to get at contents. eg no 1 ft high cages/cold frame type structures.

Go to the barbers and ask for the hair, put it in old tights and hang it up about waist height all around your lotty.

Also to add to this Wee in a bucket and spread this around a bit too

Well, that would be enough to keep me off the lottie, never mind the deer!
