overwintering garlic and broad beans
« on: October 21, 2013, 23:14 »
Is it reasonable to sow garlic and broad beans in pots now, leave them over winter in the pots and plant them out in the spring?

I'm reluctant to sow them direct on the plot as firstly I seem to have had a slug epidemic recently and secondly, we've had a lot of rain with more forecast which, combined with a heavy clay soil, would probably lead to rotting.

Garlic is definitely okay to plant in pots now, I am not sure about broad beans, I can't see why not, but someone on here will probably know for certain. To be honest I find an early spring sowing of broad beans soon catches up.

Now is a good time to sow in pots for over-wintering.

John's advice here:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I always set them off in pots about now and plant out some time in November when the plants get established. I always keep some spares in the GH (unheated), in case frost does claim any. This year, I had some left over which actually flowered in the pot. I planted them out in a bit of space I cleared when they were about a foot tall and they cropped really well.
