Overwintering broad beans
« on: September 03, 2008, 14:59 »
Hello all. I'd like to plant some broad beans soon (probably Superaguadulce or Aquadulce Claudia) for cropping early next year. One problem: my soon-to-be allotment beds are going to be full of brassicas all winter.

I can raise the broad beans in open seed beds and transplant them in spring, or start them off in my greenhouse in Rootrainers where I am sure they will be happy all winter. Which would you do?

Thanks!

Hi Jane, I plan to sow all mine on the potato patch, and transplant the best ones in spring, to the raised bed. Then dig in the rest as a green manure. I would also be tempted to start some spares off in the greenhouse, just in case!
I too will be interested in other replies to this thread. :)

You can do either, but delay the sowing, since they would grow huge otherwise.

I'd advise not to put the whole plot to brassicas though for rotation purposes.
