Ridiculously pleased......
« on: October 21, 2013, 12:37 »
This year carrots have been brilliant and now that I have a camera again, as well as clearing the IT issues from the laptop, I just had the share this photo.

The big carrots weigh around a pound a half each (Autumn King 2) The little yellowy leggy one is a Yellow Stone (We have eaten the best of these already)

And delicious they all were too  :D

Ooooooh lovely carrots there Sunny.  I grated some up t'other day for the WW muffins. Really tasty they are too but a bit heavy on points, hence cutting them in half  :D

I've had best results this year with Early Nantes  :)

What lovely carrots. I think it must have been a good year as my early nantes have also been great. It's the first time I have had any success at all with carrots.

Fab carrots Sunny :)

This has been my first bad year for carrots - don't know if the varieties were just more susceptible to splitting but they were nearly all exploded!

Don't home grown carrots have such intense flavours that you just don't get with supermarket ones ;)

Beautiful carrots, Sunny. And I know they taste fantastic as I adore mine. Home grown carrots are way superior to shop carrots.

Yes well done. Mine would have been good but for the pesky carrot fly. Sad to say I'm about to dig the flaming lot up and stick them on the bonfire. Raised beds and/ or enviromesh for me next year. Very upset about that as they were so tasty earlier on.

Great result, KC!

For the first time ever, we've had more than we need, and I'm working out how to store them...

Your crop is excellent, and the right size too!

I store mine in the ground Growster, and after seeing that Harvest programme will do so again this year.

- cut of the foliage
- cover them with a thick layer of straw
- put thick black plastic sheeting over the bed, weighted down

PS Add some slug bait under the straw if you use such things

Easy then to get to them and dig, whenever you want  :D

PS Thanks for being so appreciative everyone -- best carrots I have ever grown  :D

I hoiked a few out yesterday, Sunny, and they were getting quite a lot of slugs wandering around!

I like your idea, though, and will seek out the black plastic from last year's Halloween shenanigans...
