Growing Figs
« on: October 18, 2013, 12:22 »
I read in the Telegraph gardening section:
In the autumn, remove unripe figs BUT LEAVE EMBRYONIC FRUITLETS.How to distinguish between the two?Just size?
I have plenty of unripe figs on my tree, some quite small.Even when I removed bigger unripe figs, there was a milky flow where I detached from the plant .
Thanks

Embryonic fruitlets are no larger than a match head, whereas the unripe fruits are much larger and green

They are easily snapped off, and white sap oozes out for a minute or two normally, so don't worry.

Hope that helps  :D

I generally remove anything over pea size but last year left much larger (20mm) which suprisingly survived the ice and snow and developed this year. :)

I find if you leave them they drop off when it gets cold.
