Getting ready for 2014
« on: October 02, 2013, 16:46 »
Hi, we have started getting the lottie ready for next year.
Thought you might like to see our Brassica Cages that the son and hubby built 4years ago.
Mainly to save all the rows over netting the cabbages etc.
They are 12'L X 10'W X 6'H, and covered in debris netting

Good for you!  They look very smart!. :)

Can't be bothered with brassicas as we garden in bags/boxes and the soil isn't stable enough for them, but I do like the cages....

I've just received lots of seeds for next year, so we're looking forward to the new season, even though the toms are still going!
Need to order some muck and do some rearranging of raised beds and things, but it'll have to wait until half=term.  ;)

Excellent vron! I can hear the power tools calling again  :).  Must have been well made to last four years so far and still look new.  Did you use tanalised timbre and just treat it every year?

They are very smart

Sadly our site is so windy that they might take off unless they are well tied down

Have considered building something similar, but moving it around has been the stumbling point.

This is the sort of thing my mate John has on his plot.
It's smaller than your brassica houses vron, but so useful. Since John wasn't using his I took it over and for the first time I was successful with calabrese broccoli!!
My leeks are looking pretty good in there at the mo too ;)

John's brassica house is built from plastic sheeting just above knee high, then a wooden frame covered in enviromesh type stuff. 2 beds either side with a path in the middle.
Works a treat.
May even be able to put some overwintering lettuces in there?

I've done a similar thing using a gazebo frame that was in the sale of a well known DIY retailer. The legs of the frame are pushed well into the ground and then tethered to metal fence spikes. The debris netting allows the wind to pass through and provides a micro-climate inside. I have put a zip in so that it is easy to get into and out of and I can work in it easily. So far it has stood the test of time and I simply dismantle it and move it when needed.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Hi Wavvertree Red, yes they are very well built, using 2"x2" tannernised wood.
Yes they are tied down, and the roof re-enforced for the winter.

It can be dismantled as it all bolts together, roof seperates from the four sides.
Yes they are lifted and move to the next set of beds each year for rotation of crops.

There are six 13'L x 11'W beds on the top of the lottie with slabbed paths between them.
Then the grass/lawn area and then the bottom part which is aprox 21'L x 22'W.

We rotate the cages between the top six as can't be bothered to dismantle them to move to the bottom.
Have enclosed more pics.

Will they take snow weight vron?  My debris netting, supported just with water pipe hoops, collapsed completely under snow (which didn't do the Brassica plants much good!!) Since that lesson was learnt, the first Winter season, I now replace the debris netting with bird netting some time after the Cabbage White butterfly disappearing, and before the first snow appearing ...

The cages are amazing. I hope you don't mind if I use the design and build smaller ones to fit my beds?

Very nice frames indeed. And the garden is also very nice.

Wish we could get that netting over here but no luck.

Cheers vron. Nice plot all round  :). I've just thought, there's a couple of unwanted greenhouse frames where we are which could do a similar job..........
